I have always been a firm believer in good honest advice told in plain English. Clients always have a choice. They can either buy into the heritage, history, craft and art of a real, time served bespoke tailor like myself. Or they can buy into the self promoting hype, the fancy location and bullshit talk of a salesman that is posing as a tailor. It’s really that simple. A real bespoke tailor is someone who has actually apprenticed under a master or in my case several masters. Unfortunately, most tailors Leeds are not even tailors.

A ‘normal’ suit that is made in any kind of modern factory set up will take merely minutes to fully make. Of course you couldn’t follow a suit from the cutting room to the final despatch in a few minutes, but the actual time, or time and motion time due to the nature of sub division on a large-scale means the actual make time for a suit is very low indeed. My late fathers factory made for numerous tailors Leeds, and as an example made a fully machined two piece suit around every 25 minutes. By comparison, all my genuine, handcrafted bespoke suits will take at least 80 full man hours of time to make. There is just no comparison between a genuine bespoke made suit in terms of quality and fit, the customer service you will receive and a factory made suit, however it may be dressed up, period.

Traditional Scottish heavy weight tweeds, or lighter weight wool Worsted ? The weight of the tweed cloth is a very important consideration in the choice of fabrics for any tweed wedding suit.

Although generally the heavier weight of cloths can tend to have more longevity. Nowadays the location of your wedding may require a more appropriate lightweight cloth. With more and more brides and grooms opting for a wedding abroad to guarantee the sun, no one wants to be wearing a 30oz worsted suit in 35’ heat. But for a UK wedding, we recommend tweeds between 11 and 16oz weight range being perfect for most months of the year.

By far the most popular colours for tweed wedding suits are still the classic plaid. It’s sensible and prudent for grooms to consider the use future use of their  wedding suit. After all, it’s an expensive purchase. Tweed wedding suits that have been made in the more traditional blue and grey shades of cloth are therefore quite easy to fit into daily life without too much trouble.

The cloth pictured here would be a lovely cloth for a tweed wedding suit. And I only use the finest English cloth from the best merchants in their field.

The traditional shaped English style of coat is still the most popular style and understandably so. To be honest, not much looks better than a well-cut suit with a clean chest. A  sharp defined shoulder line with a nicely shaped lapel leading down to the shaping into the waist. And a moderate flair given over the hips.

Plaids are a great choice. It’s very easy to split your trousers from your suit to create an odd jacket for smart/casual wear. Definitely a good way to get a lot of bang for your buck.

A formal function calls for rather more effort and the ultimate black tie outfit. This brings a world of options into play. From the fundamental choices between either midnight blue dinner suits, or black cloth and a double or single breasted jacket. To more subtle ones involving jetted or flapped pockets, satin or grosgrain facing, or peak lapels or shawl collar.

Black Tie

Either way there’s nothing better to wear with black tie than a white piqué-fronted evening shirt with a turn-down collar, and a proper black bow-tie in the same kind of silk as the facing on the lapels. Finish the outfit with a pair of long black socks in fine wool or cotton, a snowy white linen pocket square and a pair of highly polished black whole-cut shoes, ideally with silk shoelaces.

All of these things are correct, what separates the dinner suit is an appetite for timeless style. Single or double-breasted jacket, black with jetted pockets, no vents and grosgrain facing on the lapels. Or a wish for a more contemporary look, which would take the form of a lean and rather short midnight blue jacket with a shawl collar, and slim flat-fronted trousers.
