We all make mistakes, and I’m no exception. I’ve just made a big one. My client called to collect his finished suit on Wednesday. When I tried it on him I saw that the front balance was short. So, I’ve had to remove the sleeves and completely remove all the collar to lengthen the front balance through the shoulder, you can see the old chalk line which was the previous shoulder inlay. I’ve subsequently made a complete new collar, seen here in this picture, and I’ve got the sleeves to put back in and then completely re-fell it all up… it’s a LOT of work for one slip of attention. But, I’ll be able to rest easy knowing that I’ve not palmed off an inferior garment onto my client, and I know for a fact that many others in a similar position simply would have. I don’t send out ill fitting garments, period, and my client is actually pleased that I pointed this fault out to him. There’s no negative to putting faults right no matter how long it’s going to take. Have the balls to tell your client, “Sorry, Sir, I’ve made a mistake” True bespoke tailoring, no smoke no mirrors. This is where it all started for me as a solo bespoke tailor. When I was made redundant from my late father’s tailoring factory in 1996, I scrounged a derelict 1950’s shed from a school caretaker friend and re-purposed it in my back garden, and I quickly set myself up as a trade maker. The stuff on the go (not the mess kit that was mine) was for some pretty well known names within the trade that are still going today.
