Mens Bespoke Overcoats

Our ability to create unique one-off designs via the multitude of style options we have available means we can offer everything from classic, timeless and traditional to clean-lined, elegant and contemporary.

The 6thEarl of Chesterfield seems to have been the father of the overcoat as we know it today. No proper gentleman would have dared to take off his coat in public.

A well-cut and fitted bespoke overcoat should always have a long single vent at the back. This long vent will allow the client a comfortable stride. And a bespoke overcoat should always extend below the knee. A well tailored overcoat is a quality investment and will certainly last you for years.

From the classic Chesterfield or Ulster, through to a pea coat or Crombie. An overcoat is a wardrobe essential, designed to keep you warm and provide protection from our notoriously bad weather. There’s so much more to an overcoat than just function though and choosing a tailored is a great way to ensure you look stylish and elegant, regardless of how cold, wet and windy it is…

A rich history of English tailoring and traditional practices

At Desmond Merrion, we take pride in our rich history of English tailoring and traditional practices that have been proven over generations. Using the highest quality materials, which together with our precise measuring techniques and guidance, ensure you will be delighted with the bespoke jackets we provide.

For a tropical holiday abroad (Or the rare hot days here in the U.K.) Desmond might suggest making up a lightweight single-breasted jacket in a pale colour. Jackets cut in a tropical-weight wool, silk and linen blend cloth, or a more open weave travel cloth such as Fresco. For something more luxurious, Bamboo or wool and cashmere blends are perfect. All cloths are available in beautiful colours and patterns.

At the other end of the spectrum, thornproof tweeds and naturally water-resistant overcoating. Warming woollen flannels and high-twist worsteds can all be brought to bear on the winds and rains of even the harshest of winters.

Now, the question arises as to what exactly a fresco fabric is and why it wears so cool ? Fresco is generally made of multiple yarn, high twisted wool and has a plain weave. The high twist allows for an open weave, which makes the fabric very airy in the sense that you can feel any breeze. Also, due to its high twist, it has a rather coarse feel to it and a rather hard touch.
